Week of December 10 - FINAL BLOG

Reflect upon your experiences this semester with meeting the competencies under Domain #4 (Professional Responsibilities).

Consider what artifacts and documents you have which fulfill this domain, including in-service days, workshops, and other professional training, camp and tutoring experiences, coaching, conference attendance and/or presentations, and membership in professional associations, like PCSS, PSEA, etc.

This blog represents the first draft of the reflective essay you will use for Domain #4 in your professional portfolio.

CONGRATULATIONS! YOU MADE IT!

  1. The fourth and final domain of Danielson’s domains is professional responsibilities. This domain can be defined as reflecting on teaching, maintaining accurate records, and participating in a professional community.
My first artifact for this section is an assessment that the co-operating teachers at my field placement put together for their students to take. This was an awesome experience because I was able to view how teachers come together and work on such assignments for every student to take. Viewing this also allowed me to understand what it means to participate in a professional community with other educators.
Another artifact that I really enjoyed was the trip my methods class took to the PCSS conference in Lancaster. This was an awesome experience which allowed us to work and interact with other future educators as well as teachers that are currently in the field. As a group I felt that we learned tons of new ideas and ways to make class interesting and fun for the students without losing sight of getting the content aspect across to them. This experience also allowed me to realize that even as a teacher I will never stop learning .
An artifact that allowed me and a student to experience what it would be like incorporate parents was a back to school night presentation that we created. This allowed us to create a mock back to school night power point that we would use when introducing ourselves to the parents as well as what we will be teaching their children.

  2. Professional Development is critical in the Education profession, so it is critical that I cover Danielson's 4th Domain (Professionalism) well in my portfolio. I have also learned a lot from class and from my field experience about Professionalism.

From my field placement I have learned that I need to be professional at all time. Wearing the right clothes for the job is important so the students understand that I am a professional. Also having a professional attitude with my students and fellow teachers is very important.

From class I have learned that there are several ways to get involved and be a professional. I attended the PCSS in Lancaster this semester and learned more about other organizations and conferences that could be a part of to keep developing my professionalism. I have also seen the benefits of reading professional journals, as I saw a lot of articles in class from journals or other scholarly sources.

Some articles I have that I will use in my portfolio are a mock back to school night presentation. It shows how I can communicate with parents and community members. I also have interviews with a general education teacher as well as a special educator showing I have been in communication with other professionals in the field. The last artifact I have is a list of the seminars and programs I attended at the 2010 PCSS conference in Lancaster. I learned a great deal about being a professional educator from those seminars.

  3. Danielson’s Domain #4 is about professional responsibilities. As a teacher, college is just the beginning of an education and a degree. Throughout a career, teachers are expected to grow professionally in many different ways in both developing and participating. As a teacher, involvement is important in any school in order to ensure that the students can connect on a professional basis. This allows the classroom to be managed in such a way that there is a teacher-student professional relationship formed. The teacher creates a culture of learning based off the needs and interests of the students and the students can know what to expect from the teacher.

My first artifact for this domain is my In-Service Blog. This is a demonstration of professional responsibilities. The blog is from Education 305 Method Course and discusses the in-service day that I participated in during Friday observation days. I reflected on the learning experience the in-service day was for me. This demonstrates my ability to work with other educators in the school community.

My second artifact for this domain is the PCSS Conference. The PCSS Conference fulfills Domain #4 because it was an experience for me to learn, twentieth first century ideas for Social Studies education. It helped to develop me further in my professional growing process. I was able to obtain numerous resources that would help to better the classroom and facilitate global learning in the classroom.

My final artifact for this domain is the evaluation from Dr. Finley-Bowman. This evaluation was written after teaching my second lesson for Education 305 Methods Course. This demonstrates the improvement in my teaching style and exemplifies the ability to modify my teaching style in order to meet the learning needs of every student.

  4. When I think of Domain Four I think of more than just learning, taking classes, etc. I think about doing everything you can to not only better yourself as a person and an educator, but also to give back to the school. Domain 4 is about being a role model and an active member in the school community.

Throughout my time at Elizabethtown College, and this year alone I've accumulated several artifacts that can display my growth. My first is my weekly ED 305 blog. Here I would write down personal thoughts and observations about my time spent at my placement this semester.
My second artifact is a set of two evaluations given to me throughout the semester from Dr. Bowman, my supervisor. My third artifact is a poster from Elizabethtown's new running club starting next semester. I am the president of the club. It displays how I am involved in campus clubs and try to give back. My final artifact is a research paper I wrote for my Honors class on Amish Culture. It is on of my best writing pieces.

  5. You never finish growing professionaly. It is a continual process of rediscovering what works and improving yourself and your work. You can spend years carrying out a lesson one way and then at a conference such as PCSS you discover from another teacher a method that works ten times better than what you were using. It's your ability to adapt to a changing world and finding ways to bridge the generation gap between your students and yourself that is part of this development. Finding ways to make what happens in the classroom relevant and obtaining your own knowledge and increasing your abilities and skills as a scholar.

Graduate school is something all education majors must go through, one way or another. This is also part of a professional development, because you are increasing your scholarship and presence among other professionals.

It's not hard work alone that a teacher needs to have in order for he or she to do their job correctly. It requires dedication, talent, and heart. I feel these three characteristics describe myself as a Social Studies educator.

It's really beginning to sink in that when I graduate in May I will become a professional teacher. I feel as though I am equipped with everything I need right now to be an effective and influential teacher, but what I lack is direction. I don't know where to go from here.

An artifact I have for this domain is my experience as a soccer coach and communicating with families. This was an essential aspect to being a head coach. I needed to communicate schedules of practices, games, fundraisers, and special events. It required that I keep organized files and reports on the girls' progress and development and required me to relay the information I gathered to the girls' respective parents. This also required me to look through many resources and locate resources and ideas essential to the efficacy of practice and instruction.

Overall, professional development is the domain where I have accumulated the most artifacts. It is difficult for me to discern which artifacts to include in this domain becuase I have so many and they all seem so related to one another. I was a little disappointed I left out as many resources from my portfolio as I did, but I didn't see the need to create an overabundant and oversaturated domain where it looks like I'm trying to overcompensate for something. I tried to select only my best and greatest accomplishments and artifacts.
