Reflect upon your experiences this semester with meeting the competencies under Domain #1 (Planning and Preparation). Consider what artifacts and documents you have which fulfill this domain. You may reflect upon experiences from your field placement and our methods course.
This blog represents the first draft of the reflective essay you will use for Domain #1 in your professional portfolio.
Domain Number One dealing with Planning and Preparation is important for educators to be aware of because it has true impact on the classroom functions. If teachers do not plan well and are not prepared for the each class day, then the students will realize this and will not put into the class the expected concern they should be putting forth.
ReplyDeleteAs a student that will going out full-time into the field in the next few semeaters, I have many resources that will help me to be prepared. First, the lesson plans in the classroom have prepared me to plan properly. I have learned the advantages and disadvantages of having a lesson plan written properly and throughly. I even have a lesson written already (in the case I ever teach Sumerian writing) and I have another lesson done on a case study of a country. With this lesson plan, I have many primary and secondary sources that will help me be prepapred for the lesson.
At my placement, Mr. Lister has given me many artifacts that I can use in the classroom. He gave me a typical middle school syllabus, a typical middle school lesson plan format for Lower Dauphlin, and many articafts dealing with teacher responsibilities.
Furthermore, Mr. Lister has shown me the dos and don'ts of planning and preparation. For example, he suggested that a teacher always uses the next period to develop the lesson being taught for the day. With six classes, one should always be tyring to make the lesson better. Also, Mr. Lister has shown me to look for the little tasks that help to keep the class flowing: having a seating chart ready, having papers handed-out at the beginning of class, and knowing the students' names.
I believe that I have a lot more to learn about planning and preparation but I think that currently I will be ready to teach. I have learned how to be ready for class both in ED 305 and my placement.
Danielson's Domain #1, Planning and Preparation is one the basis of a good teacher. If proper planning and preparation are put into every lesson, activity, or event, then the teacher should be more confident and better prepared for any situation that may occur. I have learned a lot about planning and preparation this semester from my field placement and also from ED 305. I have learned some good and some bad techniques from my co-op over the course of the semester which will assist me in my future aspirations to become a teacher.
ReplyDeleteI have several lesson plans that I will be using as artifacts in my portfolio. I have lessons plans for teaching the Persian/Greek wars of the 500s and 400s B.C.E., as well as a lesson plan on the Economy of Venezuela. I also have lesson plans adopted for the needs of English Language Learners. These lesson plans range from teaching a lesson about trip planning (in Mexico, using the knowledge of the ELL's in my class) to the people of Mesopotamia. Having a knowledge of the diversity the is possible in my classroom and already having the knowledge to prepare for that will be very helpful.
Mr. Kratzer has shared with me several good and bad tips of lesson planning. He has taught me to always be confident with my lessons and relaxed in from of the class. For as much as he has given me good advice, I have seen him practice not so good planning and preparation. He has printed out handouts during a class, and also made up chats/handouts for a class 5 minutes before they come in. He has always gotten them done (that I have seen), but I want to be a little more prepared than I have seen him be.
ED 305 has taught be some valuable lessons about Domain #1. I must to confident and knowledgeable about the concepts, terms, and methods in my classroom. ED 305 has taught me many new methods and concepts that will be helpful to me as a teacher.
Overall planning and preparation is one of the most critical aspects of teaching, and I am on my way to being a competent teacher in those categories.
"I love it when a plan comes together!"

Domain 1: Planning and Preparation:
One of the most important aspects of being an effective teacher is effective planning and preparation. A teacher should have plans and lessons laid out well in advance in a well thought-out, flowing, manner. Teachers should be prepared for any event that may occur.
For example:
-Finishing the first lesson early
-Being disrupted
-Having students with different learning style and/or disabilities.
From both 305 and my placement I've learned several do's and don't's of lesson planning and preparation for teaching. In 305 we learned that the more prepared you are, the better. My co-op uses the first two periods of the day (which are free to him) to rehearse his basic lesson layout. He has years of lessons saved on word documents that he adjusts over the summer to coincide with the upcoming year's calender.
He told me that he usually gets a rough idea of what he's going to say and he takes into account the learning styles of the different classes he is teaching (some are smaller and larger / louder and quieter than others). However he told me that as time went on he began using lesson plans less and less and eventually got so comfortable and confident teaching that he could just 'tell' when they were and weren't on track.
Along the way I've also accumulated a number of artifacts for Domain 1. At the NCSS conference I found many pamphlets with tips for lesson plans and activities for multiple learners. Likewise at my placement I acquired a middle-school syllabus, several activities, and a lesson plan. In 305 we were able to see sample lesson plans and learn about tips for composing them. I was also able to write my own, and now I am working on composing my second.
Domain 1, planning and preparation is a very important concept in every teachers classroom. This year Mr. Lusk has given me various tips to control my class and be ready for anything they may happen.
ReplyDeleteThis biggest thing I learned was how each classroom has its own personality. My co-op does a great job of bringing out the best of each classrooms strengths and changing what ever he has to in order for them to learn. I hope that when I am in control of my class I can do the same.
Another useful tool is having the essential question out for the students to see. If the class is ending early, Mr. Lusk has the students write about it to see if they are understanding the material. This also goes along with the comprehension component we went over with in class.
I have learned, rather difficultly, thorough my field experiences, that planning and preparation is extremely essential to effective pacing and well-times sequencing. Being able to move from one activity to another and keep students engaged is a very important part of instruction, but only proper preparations and planning can help me achieve this goal.
ReplyDeleteI discovered this problem when I realized I didn't have enough copies of a document I needed my students to have. I spent part of the class having the students who had the documents fill them out, but the remaining through were left behind and the entire class needed to wait for them to catch up.
This could have led to issues in classroom management, but thankfully the students remained on task and focused.
You will always need a back-up plan as well. Not every lesson is going to go exactly the way you want it to and you need to be prepared to adapt and alter the lesson so it can engage and challange the most students. Domain #1, if exercised correctly, makes all of the other domains easier to follow.
In my placement my co-op often uses handouts and graphic organizers over multiple lessons. Doing this enables him to maintain some flow with the same topic from one day to another. I hope to employ this as a teacher as well as his extension of this domain to the students. Not just having the domain apply to you as a teacher, but also to have the students know how to be well-prepared and have them making plans. This attitude puts a lot of responsibility in the hands of the students and they often do not know how to handle it, but this a lesson they need to learn before high school.
